There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you slip into the waters of Hanifaru Bay. Within minutes of leaving the shores of Maalhos, you find yourself at the edge of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, treading water in anticipation. Then, it happens: a dark shadow emerges from the sapphire depths, followed by another, and then twenty more.
During the "Manta Season" (May to November), Hanifaru Bay becomes a natural theater for one of the ocean's most spectacular events. Unlike typical reef encounters, the mantas here engage in "cyclone feeding"—a mesmerizing spiral where dozens of these gentle giants spin in a coordinated dance to feast on plankton. Floating on the surface, you aren't just a spectator; you are immersed in their world. The beat of their massive wings and the sheer grace of their somersaults create a humbling silence that stays with you long after you’ve climbed back onto the boat.
